On Saturday, April 26, Capital Preparatory Magnet School hosted their dynamic 9th annual
Social Justice Conference. This year’s theme was Unfinished Business: Breaking Barriers, Building Tomorrow which brought HPS' students, teachers and community leaders together to discuss a diverse set of topics on social justice.
The students' Capstone project presentations, which ranged from the availability of healthy foods in low-income communities and schools, maternal mortality in African American women, systemic racism and the underrepresentation of Black athletes in volleyball, were inspirational and showcased how these students will take what they learned at school to transform our world.
The Key Note Speaker was Alleah Red, Channel 3 Eyewitness News Anchor, and the Alumni Speaker was Scarlet Olivo, Capital Prep Class of 2021, and UCONN Class of 2025.
Superintendent Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez served as a panelist alongside Dr. Bulaong Ramiz, Mr. Malik Ramiz, and Mr. Edwin Vargas, who discussed pressing injustices we face today. A special thank you to WFSB reporter Alleah Red for moderating the panel.
Hartford Public Schools thanks Principal Dr. Kitsia Ferguson for hosting us and our community partners that helped support the event. Dr. Torres-Rodriguez extended a heartfelt thank you to Capital Preparatory Magnet School for their award presentation that recognized her tenure and contributions as Superintendent and CEO.
The day sparked a meaningful dialogue about equity and change and makes us confident that our students are more than ready to be the next generation of social justice leaders.
