Welcome to the Classical Magnet School's website. We are hopeful that you will be able to find some of the information you are seeking about our school on this website. If you are unable to find the information, please call us at 695-9100.
As you will see, Classical Magnet is a liberal arts college prepatory school which is publicly funded. We accept students from towns all over Connecticut. We emphasize a Classical education and assure that students are exposed to the rigors of a classical literature and the study of Latin. We require that all students study our five core subjects (English, History, Latin, Math, and Science) each of their seven years in the school. In addition, we require students to select two elective classes from the disciplines of Art, Drama, Music, and Athletics. All of these disciplines utilize the Paideia instructional philosophy which requires active participation in the learning process by all students. We are confident that all of our graduates have participated in a curriculum which prepares them for the challenges of the most competitive colleges and universities in the country.
We also require that all students stay on campus to participate in enrichment activities from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm every Monday thru Thursday. It is our belief that our students will use these activities to develop interests which will stay with them throughout their lives. Classical Magnet is interested in developing the whole child, and therefore, places a value on the experiences of a child beyond the classroom.
Classical utilizes State Magnet grant money to provide students with opportunites to learn beyond the classroom. Every student will take part in at least three major field trips each year. These trips are designed to extend the learning taking place in the classroom, and help students make connections between their lives and the classical curriculum.
