Enysia Rosado, a Classical Magnet School eight grade Student wins the Connecticut Belleza Latina Pagnet State title

Please join us in congratulating 8th grader Enysia Rosado for winning the Connecticut Belleza Latina Pageant state title. Now that she earned the crown for the Jr. Miss Connecticut pageant, she will go on to represent Connecticut at the National Latino Pageant in Michigan this July.

“On the weekend of February 12 – 15, I enjoyed competing in this Junior Miss CT Belleza Latina pageant to win the state title,” explained Enysia. “Any Latina girl could compete in this exciting pageant; in fact, girls came from all over the state. The contestants paid an entrance fee of $525 but then also had to purchase or borrow outfits for each required competition: interviews, photogenic sessions, eveningwear, and fashion. There was also an optional competition called Trajae Tipico that showcased a dress from the country she represented.”

“I encourage any girl interested in being a 2011delegate to apply through the website Conn Bellezalatina.com,” she added. “I am thrilled to visit Michigan in July and want others to experience the opportunity as well.”

Classical Magnet School Seventh Graders hosted National History Day

On Friday, January 22, Classical Magnet School held its National History Day fair to highlight these inventions. All students in grades 6-12 were required to participate in making projects. The whole event turned out to be amazing. Participants made exhibits, websites, documentaries, and live performances about their topic. Innovations on display included democracy, the Aztecs, the first car, Roaring 20’s dance and clothing, and the Charter Oak Tree.

We 7th graders focused on ancient Greece. There were all sorts of projects from Greek hoplites to pottery. There were triremes, the Parthenon, a statue of Athena, and so much more. Each person had to role-play their part. There was even a spectacular life- sized Parthenon!

Middle school administrator Ms. Elaine Papas commented on the event’s success, saying, “It was evident that students took the time to think out the process of their presentations and performance.” This was true because by the looks of the projects, we could tell there was much effort and time put into them. But some students’ work stood out more than others - literally. Some high school students decorated double boards— two boards stacked on top of each other! These towering boards made you crane your neck, but the eye appeal of the boards was superb and the content in them was great, too.

Also, the documentaries produced by students were excellent. The transitions were clean and the content well-informed. “Students’ documentaries were cool. They had lots of information that we could enjoy differently than if we were reading a paper. I liked them a lot,” 7th grader Emma Chadwick said.

Besides the exhibits and documentaries, there were also websites and live performances. For the websites, students had to create their own home pages and fill up the other pages with information about their people. These turned out just like ones that you would find on the internet. For the live performances, students wrote a script and then acted it out in front of spectators in the Black-Box Theater. A tough task to do, students pulled it off, and had great performances. Some examples were the Oracle at Delphi, Pericles, and fashion over time.

History Day gets better every year! The History Day Project is a national project. Here at Classical it is a tradition that the parents, teachers, and students look forward to with much anticipation.
